Switzerland: Registered partners will now have access to simplified naturalization procedures

BERN, Switzerland – The Swiss National Council has lifted barriers for the simplified naturalisation procedure of foreign nationals who are registered partners of a Swiss citizen.

On 18 December the Council approved a legislative initiative to equal the rights of registered partners to that of spouses when it comes to taking the Swiss citizenship.

Until now, the foreign partner of a Swiss citizen could not apply for fast-track citizenship; that is, submit an application after three years of marriage—five of living in Switzerland—as was the case for married couples.

The spouse must have had Swiss citizenship before getting married.
