Pregnant women with coronavirus can send it to their children

A study of 33 pregnant women in China infected with the new coronavirus found that three of them gave birth to COVID-19.

All three infants survived after receiving treatment for their symptoms, doctors reported Thursday in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics.

One of these infants delivered with caesarean section almost nine weeks before the due date because the mother suffered from pneumonia caused by COVID-19. The child’s health problems were mainly due to being born prematurely, not because it was infected with coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2, the authors wrote.

“The clinical symptoms of 33 newborns with or at risk for COVID-19 were mild and the results were favorable,” wrote the authors, who were from two children’s hospitals in Wuhan and one in Shanghai.

“Since strict infection control and prevention procedures were implemented during delivery, it is likely that the sources of SARS-CoV-2 in newborns … were the origins of the mothers,” the doctors add. “It is crucial to screen pregnant women and implement strict infection control measures, quarantine of infected mothers, and close monitoring of newborns at risk for COVID-19.”
